Thorarosebird

Good evening, my darlings. I'm a bit out of sorts today, in fact, I'm at a loss for how to convey my feelings right now. Nostalgic, perhaps? I've spent the last couple of hours reading entries for June ~ Week 1, and I'm quite overcome. In recent months, I've very laughingly referred to myself as the Flame-Evangelist, but honestly, that's a title that I intend to wear proudly for as long as this community will have me. *goofy smile* I love it here!

Reading through those entries today brought back a lot of memories, not only of when I first joined the community and how much my writing has progressed, but also memories of all those delicious newbies arriving in the September/October'09 Great Migration! Y'all have grown so much. I just want to pinch ya!

Now, the FLAME is being graced with the arrival of more young writers, and even the return of earlier members! So, I'd like to take this opportunity to say WELCOME NEW DARLINGS! Prepare to enjoy, learn, and grow!

If I would have been successful in dragging tonight's featured writer here a bit sooner, I would have definitely labelled her a newbie, as she's one of the early birds that flew in during the Great Migration last fall. However, I don't reckon that label fits her anymore. *sniffles* She's all "grown up". Give a hello and happy birthday to our very own thorarosebird .

(Psst... for the new arrivals who haven't yet had the pleasure of reading our past featured writers, just click on the tag below :D)

Bio:

Hello flamers! Thora here! :)

I'm a nineteen/twenty year old lass living in the south of England with my mum, her partner, and our dog Boycie, who snores. :D

I've been a member of the community since September 2009, and my earliest memory of it is reading Toxic's winning entry for that month and feeling very intimidated by the writing quality. At that time, I'd only just started writing again after a dry spell that began in November 2008 - I unintentionally completed NaNoWriMo that year and completely burnt myself out - and was feeling very rusty indeed. Just before my first contest, I told Jacques how worried I felt, and he told me to shut up and grow some balls.

I'm totally kidding. XD He gave me some very kind advice and support. He probably doesn't remember that little exchange, but it was a huge boost for me at the time - thank you, Jacques! ♥

I've always read books. The earliest ones I read were books my nanny gave me: What Katy Did, The Famous Five series and an illustrated anthology of Hans Christian Andersen, which had one picture that gave me nightmares. I started reading fantasy novels when the first Harry Potter book came out. I was hooked from start to finish, and around that time read His Dark Materials, The Abhorsen Trilogy, the Pellinor Quartet, and various other fantasy books that still have pride of place on my bookshelf.

I started writing when I was about twelve or thirteen. My first serious piece of writing was a knock-off of The Lord of the Rings. I also wrote and completed (shock horror!) a story about a girl who could shape-shift, as well as drawing a map which spanned six A4 pages and was the setting for multiple stories. I still have the map and I'm pretty proud of it. :)

The genre I feel most comfortable writing in is fantasy, without a doubt, and I like to sprinkle my writing with steampunk, slapstick comedy, and pompous characters.

Since last September, I feel like I've come a long way with my writing. I'm very grateful for everything the Flame has done for me. I've met some lovely people, made inimitable friends and read some incredible stories. Even now, we have many new members competing for June - I wish you all the best, and I can't wait to meet and get to know you all. :)

The Chosen Piece:

I had serious trouble deciding which piece to use for this. I went for the entry that I had the most fun writing, and still think back on as my favourite. It was also the first time I won a week so I'm very, very proud of it! It was written for the second week of March, and the prompt was Luminary.
