It was the Roman calendar by Numa Pompilous in which the month of February first appeared, (along with January) and the word comes from 'februa' which means cleansing or purification. A fitting word, in my opinion, as February signifies a long awaited new beginning.

Though the total days are short compared to the other months of the year, for me here in the central U.S., February seems the longest of all. Winter's weight has become a tedious burden; the view of leafless trees has become tiresome, as has the ugly dregs of dirty snow and a seemingly endless cold, gray sky. Then of course on the 14th, we're expected to perk up, be cheery and sweet, and pander to the commercialism that is Valentine's Day and celebrate Love.

Yuck.

Among other examples of the ooey gooey ridiculous, Love + Commercialism = Sappy Poetry. Right?

Not necessarily.

What I've learned here among my darling FLAMERS who have given me a warm, unexpectedly enjoyable introduction into original poetry, is that Love deserves to be expressed in ways as unique as the individuals experiencing it. Emotion may have specific names within a language, but we don't all have cookie-cutter reactions to those emotions of the same name. Why would I give my husband, or mother, or best friend a card printed with gooey, sappy, uber-sweet language that I would never speak with my own voice? Why, indeed! Self-expression is at it's loveliest when it is genuine.

Today's featured writer offers a terrific example of a unique brand of self-expression. My darling FLAMERS, I give you raven_tiger .

BIO:

Hello fellow Flamers. My name is Krystle but on LJ I go by the name raven_tiger. I am twenty years old and I live in Canada with my two roomates. Currently I am working and saving money to go back to school to get both my bachelor's degree in Psychology while minoring in English, and also get a MFA. I would love to be a psychologist because the human mind intrigues me, and I've always wanted to help others especially those who have been sexually assaulted and/or been abused. I would also love to be a published writer one day.

I have been a storyteller since I was very small and it's something I never "grew out of". I predominantly wrote short stories and had lots of novel ideas until I reached the age of thirteen and wrote my first poem about a nightmare I had. Since then I have been slowly improving my writing to the point where I am getting the initial stages of my first book of poetry together. I write normally under the pseudonym May Elizabeth.

Writing for me is a personal way to express myself and share my story of who I am and what I've experienced. Writing is also how I create my own world and have fun in it. I write mainly because I enjoy doing it, and it's my obsession. I would still write even if I couldn't, because nothing makes me happier than creating something. I like to create something out of destruction.

My reading tastes vary and the writers who influence my writing change as I learn, grow, and experience. I will read anything I can get my hands on (well almost anything), and I enjoy nothing more than getting lost in a good novel, a book of short stories, or an anthology of poetry. I particularly enjoy reading amateur writers, because some of the best writing I have read has been done by unpuplished writers.

The Chosen Piece:

The work I chose to showcase is one of my new favourite poems. It's called Frozen and it was written for my loved one who I refer to as Reaper. I picked this one because writing love poetry is still quite new to me, so I'm enjoying this new change to my writing.
