Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.
~ Mark Twain

I adore creating fictional characters-- naming them, painting an image of their facial features, tuning in to the sound of their voices, and imagining their reactions to various scenarios. The process entertains me immensely! I'll readily admit that I extract bits and pieces from myself and the people I've met throughout my life to interject into the personalities or features of my characters. However, I like to think that while they may have my bad attitude when answering a knock on the door before they've had their coffee, or my third boyfriend's cute dimpled cheeks, they are unique individuals in their own right.

It was my desire to write realistic yet colorful fiction that led me to brigits_flame , but it was narrative non-fiction that originally drew me to writing.

How many of y'all were required by an English teacher of the past to write two pages on "What I did on summer vacation"? Yeah, I think we've all had to. (Too many times perhaps.)

The group of bizarre, volatile, accident prone group of people that compiled my family made for some unforgettable summertime experiences. Not many of my teachers believed a word I wrote for these assignments. I can't say I blame them.

Why is it that we even put up with family? Maybe, because they provide us with truths certain to be stranger than fiction? And just maybe, we learn a great deal about ourselves when we preserve our crazed loved ones in a story.

I'm about to fall over on my keyboard, or I would have looked around FLAMECHAT for our next featured writer just so we could trade stories about our aggravating sisters :D

Welcome to the first edition of the April Writers Showcase, my darlings! It's with pleasure that I give you Pauljoy!

Bio:

Hiya Flamers!

I've been putting this little assignment (given by the lovely Katden ♥) away time and time again, and now I must face it (oh the HORRORS). I'm just terrible with biographies, even mini-ones like these (I dread that question "tell me about yourself" in job interviews. I would more than likely stutter and take twenty minutes looking for the right answer).

Okay, for starters – call me Joy. I'm in my final year of high school (102 more days left: YES) and presently attempting to start my required portfolio for architecture (17 days left: NO). I'm a book nerd. I love reading more than anything. I read when I'm relaxing, bored, eating a delicious meal (usually ending up getting my books ruined this way, but I can't help it!), or even in the bathroom (well, what can you do?). I probably shouldn't have said that last part, but it's true! I've been reading since I was – actually, I don't remember. I'll tell you something else instead: the first book I've ever read was Clifford, the Big Red Dog.

Given that I have awful bio-itis, I went on FLAME chat and asked the wonderful people online for help. Raphaelish and Vyvyan_Wilde gave me a few questions to start with ♥ Here's one: my favourite colour is yellow (I liked this Power Ranger the best). It's changed over the times, but it's the one that's stuck with me.

My writing career (or lack of) started way back when I was a wee little one in the third grade. I wrote and drew the pictures for a book about my first cat, Rainbow. I even wrote a tiny self-biography in the back. I admit in the years coming, I aspired to be a writer – not anymore. Or at least, I could be a writer on the side (and an artist AND a musician – haha, just kidding there. I do like to be ambitious though). I'm more focused about my art these days. When I'm inspired, I am thorough with my art. I don't stop until I'm satisfied. With writing, it doesn't come as natural to me but I still like to do it. It's fun to be able to create your own characters and make crazy scenarios for them.

My inspiration for writing and art comes from a mix of real life and dreams. I'm fairly quiet (when I'm not with friends) so I tend to observe a lot of things. If I'm on the bus, at school, work, I just start thinking about anything and then DING! There's an idea!

As for improvements on my writing (since that book about Rainbow), I find that I'm more meticulous with it. I have less grammatical errors (although I'm trying to break my habit of overuse of commas) and I'm more aware of what I'm writing (while it still doesn't stop me from other errors). The ones that really got me into writing though are my friends. In the sixth grade, we started writing fanfics (is it just me, or did most people start off this way?). I'm a bit competitive so I would often try to outdo my friends; this means that whatever they did, I'll try and do it better (this didn't always work, but it greatly improved my writing!). My friends are more of a writing buff than I am so I turn to them for mentorship. And since I've discovered Brigits_Flame, it has influenced my competitive nature into writing even better.

One last question: Raph asked me about a superpower that I may want, or may have. I do have a superpower actually (hardly). I can bark like a dog. No, really. I can bark. I can also make the cooing noise of a pigeon, and my cat's mewling when she wants attention, but my specialty is barking. Okay, that's it. Thanks for listening! ♥ It has been my pleasure.

The Chosen Piece:

It's a short anecdote about my sister and a friend of mine. I love my family to pieces (literally, sometimes) so I thought you all might enjoy a stroll down memory lane :)
