some blue fluffy balls with text Missflyer

I was a teenager in the 80s, and spent a great deal of time developing a fine rebellion. When I wasn't dying my hair pink and mouthing off to my mother, I hid away with the Kleenex's while watching this.

Yes. Bad ass on the outside. Cheese muffin on the inside. That's me. Even today, that song makes me sniffle, I admit it, okay?!!!

"We Are the World" was initiated by concerned celebrities to raise money for African famine relief in 1985, and the response to it was astonishing. What I've always loved about the song, are the words:

"We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me..."

For me, the sentiment goes far beyond a one time opportunity to give to charity. We are the world. And yet, we often allow physical and cultural boundaries, language, and plain old misconception disallow our absolute right ... our duty ... to accept and love each other. Now, I realize that I'm preaching to the choir here. My darling FLAMERS cross borders of every sort to come and share a bit of their lives, their histories, their creativity every day. To all of you, I say thanks. ♥

Today's featured writer is quite the world traveler, and one of our newer members. Please give a warm welcome to Missflyer!

Bio:

Bonjour to everyone on Brigit's Flame, new and old, familiar and not-so-familiar. In most of my online endeavors I go by missflyer, but you can call me Stephanie. I also answer to Su-chan (thanks to my Japanese volleyball team), Little Bit (thanks to my coworkers at Walt's Grocery), and sometimes Ste-chan (thanks to the kind ladies at Donna's Bakery in Japan). Oddly enough, I didn't start getting nicknames until I was 19, but in the three years since I've gotten three!

The spotlight on Brigit's Flame caught my eye as it caught the eye of so many others, and I flew into the Great Ingress of September 2009, when I was just settling into life as a study abroad student in Japan. Writing for Brigit's Flame, however sporadically during my 3.5 months in Japan junior year, was a wonderful experience, and continues to be a wonderful experience. Especially now that school is out for the summer, so I'll actually have time again to write regularly.

I started writing really early, I think it was kindergarten, where I wrote a short story about a rose (inspired by Beauty and the Beast, it seems, since the rose wanted to be human), and it won some sort of prize for my age group. I did not do much writing after that, but I did make up lots of stories with the usual toys like Barbies and stuffed animals, and playing make-believe. In junior high I concentrated more on doodling manga-style people in notebooks, but in high school is when I really started writing.

Freshman year. New school, no friends. Enter: art class, English class, and an overnight school lock in. Result: two great friends that shared some of the same interests, and our first sleepover on Halloween. We were still really new to each other and didn't know what to do, so we decided to start writing a story together. We would each write a page in a notebook, and then work off of what the one before us wrote. In the beginning we did a lot of tugging at each other, pulling the story (back) in the direction we each wanted it to go, but then we started plotting together. Well, that one story evolved into a trilogy, which we wrote during our first 3 years in high school. The characters and world grew, and we wanted to continue the story, so we planned another trilogy, the first book of which we have started writing. However, with the advent of college, the planning, plotting, and writing got put on hold, though one friend did continue to edit the first three books.

Since graduating high school, we rarely see each other, and I stopped writing except for school papers. I just had no time, and then Brigit's Flame found me. Now I have written new stories, and actually started writing ones that I thought of during high school but did not have time to write. I love every minute of it, of being able to create a world or even a person that comes out of my imaginings and bringing them to life. Or having them come to life through me, as that is sometimes the case too. In the beginning I was writing mostly realistic fiction, but as I have kept writing, I've found myself able to foray into fantasy and science fiction, which are also my favorite genres to read in. I love the magic of fantasy and sci-fi, and it just pulls me into entirely new realms that I want to share with others. The tricky part is figuring out if there is a plot hiding behind the beautiful images, or not. Sometimes it takes some time on the back burner to find the plot, or even just to come up with a story, but apparently my back burners like to simmer ideas long and hard before coming up with an entrée, or even an hors d'oeuvre.

The Chosen Piece:

So for my chosen piece, I would like to present "One Ball to Hit them All", one of my more realistic stories (but it was a close call with "Unbinding", which poured out in a couple hours of midnight glory). I hope you enjoy, and I look forward to writing and reading more for Brigit's Flame. *bows* ?????????????(yoroshiku onegaiitashimasu)
