Lacrimaeveneris

April of 2009, our illustrious Chief Flamer, lacombe , posted a topic that will remain prominent in my memory for years: "Digging". This was during the era of videos accompanying the weekly topic, and that week's video was the gravedigger's scene of the 1996 film version of Hamlet. Why should this remain prominent in my memory? Because that prompt inspired one of my favorite characters I've yet to create. Her name is Grace and upon her birth, her mother whispers to her, "Be careful in what you seek". I swear that I actually heard that sentence spoken in a foreboding whisper as soon as I watched that video! No, it's nothing to do with Hamlet...
Inspiration is a constant wonder to me. That particular day, I was so overtaken with inspiration, I didn't leave my keyboard until I had over 2000 words written. I don't know about the rest of y'all... but that's a rare and beautiful thing for me.
The wonders did not cease, however. That week's poll produced an amazing array of fantastic stories from several flamers! It was a terrific month, in fact.
It was that never-to-be-forgotten week, that I encountered today's featured writer, lacrimaeveneris . And, just by coincidence, today's chosen piece happens to be from that very prompt! Go forth my darlings! Read and enjoy.
Bio:
So, to be quite honest, when I was approached by katden for the Showcase, I first did a happy dance and then realized I had no idea what to write about myself. I am, alas, not very interesting.
Who I am. As far as basic demographics are concerned, offline, I go by the appelation Omm, but most people online know me as lacrimaeveneris, which means "the tears of Venus" in Latin. I'm twenty-two, and a full-time student in a social work program, which accounts for my occasional hiatuses from both Livejournal and the Flame. I live in the fine city of Chicago, though I hail from Maine. I did live in Kentucky for a few years, so I do say "darlin'" and "y'all." Maine is responsible for "Ayuh" and "You cain't get theyah from he-ah."
Where it all began. As far as writing goes, I think I've been making valiant attempts at prose and poetry since I was about four, and tried to write a story in marker on my father. He was not impressed. In reality, I think I've been writing solely to stick it to the English teacher I had my sophomore year of high school, who didn't approve of my style of writing, and informed me that I could play with mechanics after I got published (my defense was "It worked in The Sound and the Fury." She informed me I wasn't Faulkner). I still have vindictive dreams of dropping a book on her desk full of mechanical errors. I had a fantastic teacher my junior year, however, who encouraged all of my writing pursuits, including creative writing (she's also responsible for me being a hardass as an editor. Sorry y'all.). I write for fun, I write for catharsis, and sometimes I write simply because I have something to say.
Inspiration:
I get inspiration from the oddest places. I once wrote an entire NaNoWriMo novel (The Golden Crane) based on a dream, and my current piece (Where or When) is from an odd piece of pillow talk I had with my significant other. Many of my ideas are of the "what if?" variety, but I also pull from plays, quotes, or snapshots. Inspiration is everywhere.
And a little bit of silliness: madame_malady asked me what the oddest thing I did as a child was, and then decided I needed to tell you all. So. The oddest thing I did as a child was that I climbed out of a second story window and dropped to the ground from there because I wanted to be Spiderman. Just goes to show that writers can be badass sometimes too!
The Chosen Piece:
This particular piece, called "Strangely!" was written for the April 2009 prompt "Digging." It's based on scenes from a play, Attempts on Her Life by Martin Crimp, and is classified as dystopian fiction. As a warning to readers, it's dark and a little bit disturbing, but so is most of my writing.
