Welcome to the Writer's Showcase! Today's featured writer is one of our newest newbies that came to us during the GREAT MIGRATION of Summer '09! It is my pleasure to present Covenmouse:

Bio:
A lot of people seem to say "I'm not good at introducing myself." I'm one of those people. Nothing makes me more nervous than having to stand up in front of a crowd (either physically, or metaphorically) and sum up my existance in a handful of sentences. Well, with the sole exception of when I know there's a bug in the room with me, and I can't see it--the term for that may be more "apprehensive," though.

So to start this off the atypical way, my name is Rebecca. We seem to have several of those in Flame, actually, so my nickname of "Rae" is good enough for me, if you have to call me anything. I'm twenty-three, a native Texan, and just this past month I finally completed the bachelor's degree in Media Arts and Animation that I may never do anything with.

I first started telling stories long before I wrote them down. Among the small collection of kids in the neighborhood growing up, I was the one who came up with the ideas for our games of "make believe," and the one that scared the pants off of them when it came to telling spooky halloween stories on the trampoline between our yards.

It wasn't until years later that I started to put things down in writing--casually, at first, throughout a few notebooks and never doing much with it. When I got into college, I started to write more "seriously." That is to say, I actually managed a few handfuls of prose before setting things aside and never looking at them again. It's only in the past year that I've been making an effort to complete full stories--and have actually succeeded, though only in the world of fanfiction.

In a way, that's why I joined the Flame when I saw it go up as a spotlight on LJ. A writing prompt community that gives me those much-needed deadlines? Absolutely fantastic. True, I haven't quite stuck to my guns (at least this month) but this community has already helped me to be far more productive than I am on my own. Writing a short snippet to a set prompt is hard, as I'm sure all of you understand, much like cutting a diamond from rock. Quite unlike this long winded bio I'm boring you with now.

The Chosen Piece:
For my chosen piece, I decided to go with my entry for "Sparkles." The story involved is in part a rebellion against the current world of fantasy romance, and partially something I've been toying about with for a year. If anyone has any questions about motivation, style choice, or some constructive critiscm I would love to hear it--and also if you would just like to see more from the "world" this piece has come from. Any help and/or comments is much appreciated.
